The story of the Battle of Hastings has long been the subject of exhaustive historical research, some of it fairly inaccessible to the general reader. In this new study Peter Poyntz Wright carefully sifts the scholarship and incorporates the broad range of that research into his lively and highly readable account. He first traces the causes of the battle and the relevant events immediately preceding it, puts into perspective the problems of invasion, analyses the military strengths and weaknesses of both armies and looks at their equipment, then follows in graphic detail the course of the fighting. The text is generously illustrated with scenes and details from the Bayeux Tapestry, as well as with maps and photographs of the terrain and features today.
